SEGD Turns 35!

general session
35 is a good age and a good time to look at where you are going, and where you have been. There have been, and will be challenges, successes, disappointments, and surprises. You’ve learned a few things along the way, but are still young enough to make a splash.

No, we’re not talking about you personally. This is not a self-help session. We’re talking together about the beginnings of environmental graphic design, even where the name came from!

SEGD is turning 35 this year, and we’re just getting warmed up! You may be surprised by theses stories from some of the original movers and shakers who formed SEGD. You’ll certainly be surprised at the attitudes of our own 30-something members. Meet a few of the visionaries who took matters into their own hands and created a movement. With Hanley Bloom, Neiman & Co., Sarah Speare, SEGD’s first executive director, and you!

Amy Lukas, Jill Ayers, Daniel Montano, Amy Owens, SEGD thirtysomethings, will give their take on the future of EGD and SEGD. Moderated by Leslie Gallery Dilworth.

Procter & Gamble’s Global Branding

9:00am

Today, environmental graphic design is a global affair touching all facets of a company’s operation. P&G, the world’s top consumer goods company, has offices and research centers all over the world, and is using EGD as a way to express its corporate brand in these workplaces. What is all the fuss about? You’ve heard all the publicity and recognition P&G has received for their emphasis on design. Now see this in action. Kelly Kolar, Kolar Design Group, will be joined by her client, Serge Bruylants, P&G’s global architect, and Abelardo Tolentino Jr., of Aidea Philippines.

Through the Looking Glass

9:00am
general session
Dynamic displays and electronic media are profoundly changing the shape and fabric of communication design in the built environment. How will you integrate these new tools into your practice? Zeche Zollverein has been called the world’s most beautiful coal mine. Shut down since 1986, the mining complex in Essen, Germany, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following a 2002 master plan by OMA/Rem Koolhaus, a multidisciplinary design team has developed Zollverein Park, the heart of a new culture and design center on the site. Christopher Ledwig of F!RST Design (Cologne) will describe his firm’s comprehensive but unconventional wayfinding system, which guides visitors using innovative maps, a system of tenant signs, ground markings, and a series of 1:715-scale cast-steel models of the site’s notable architectural features.

Session 2 | Home Depot Design Center

If only all the big-box retailers would take a cue from Home Depot, which debuted its new Home Depot Design Center concept last year. Daniel Montaño, Little’s studio principal, will show us the hipper, friendlier, more design-centric version of Home Depot, with its new logo, wayfinding, and graphics system built around the familiar orange square

Tony LaPorte, senior designer/project manager, will show us through a space that inspires employees and visitors alike.
